Ukrainians commemorate victims of Holodomor
On November 26, Ukraine commemorate victims of three Holodomors – the man-made famine in the Soviet Union that killed millions of Ukrainians
Today is the Day of Remembrance of Holodomor victims, which Ukrainians experienced in the 20th century: 1921-1923, 1932-1933 and the famine of 1946-1947. The largest famine occurred in 1932-1933, it is also called genocide of Ukrainian people.
Victims of Holodomor are commemorated every year on the fourth Saturday of November in accordance with presidential decrees of 1998 and 2007.
Holodomor was preceded by forcible collectivization of agriculture, grain procurement campaign, and mass terror in the countryside. Terror that lasted for 22 months in Ukraine was conscious and purposeful policy of Stalin government, strategy and tactics of which were carried out since 1928.
This punitive and repressive "action" was aimed at subjugation of Ukrainian peasantry, destruction of independent peasant farms that were socio-economic foundations of the Ukrainian nation.
"Ukrainians have gone through very terrible things. And despite everything, they have retained their love of freedom and the ability not to submit. Once they wanted to destroy us with hunger, now with darkness and cold. We will not be broken. Our fire will not go out. We will defeat death again", President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote.
The president also published an emotional video, featuring historical photos and images of today’s war.
