This is reported by DW.

The Minister of Defense of Germany responded to a statement made by Theo Paul, Episcopal Vicar of the Catholic Diocese of Osnabrück, during an ecumenical church congress in Osnabrück. Paul suggested that Ukraine could resist without violence, but the Minister, Pistorius, recommended telling people of Bucha that. He emphasized that if the supply of weapons to Kyiv stopped, Ukraine's situation would quickly worsen.

The vicar expressed his belief that too many people have been influenced by the logic of war since Moscow's aggression began. He stated that there are alternative ways to handle the situation. Pistorius replied, "Tell that to the people in Bucha. I can't talk about nonviolent resistance without feeling furious."

The Defense Minister also mentioned his support for peace in the future but highlighted that Ukraine must decide how it wants to achieve it.

On the other hand, the Bishop of the Protestant Church in Hanover, Ralf Meister, who also spoke at the congress, shared that his personal experience in Ukraine during the war made him believe that Ukrainians should receive necessary assistance for self-defense. He stated that now is not the right time for calls for reconciliation.

  • In February, Ukraine's ambassador to Germany and current deputy foreign minister, Andriy Melnyk, mentioned that the new German defense minister, Boris Pistorius, broke Berlin's restraint regarding providing arms to Ukraine, making him the country's most popular politician.

  • On May 19, Pistorius stressed the importance of continuing military support for Ukraine to defend against Russian aggression.

  • He also criticized the Hungarian government for blocking aid to Ukraine, expressing annoyance with their behavior.

  • Amid recent reports of destroyed Leopard 2 tanks in Ukraine, Pistorius pledged to supply more Leopard 2 tanks on June 13.
