New Zealand tightens sanctions on Russia and Belarus over Ukraine invasion
On Tuesday, September 24, New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters announced the introduction of new sanctions against individuals in Belarus and Russia for the illegal invasion of Ukraine
Scoop reported the information.
“This latest round of sanctions targets actors involved in Russia’s illegal occupation of Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant, Russia’s military-industrial complex, and Belarusian individuals and entities providing support to the invasion,” the New Zealand Foreign Minister said.
He emphasized that the occupation of the Zaporizhzhya NPP poses a serious threat to nuclear safety and called on Russia to immediately withdraw its troops from the territory of Ukraine.
It is noted that the new sanctions will affect five individuals and six legal entities involved in supporting the invasion.
“The sanctioning of Belarusian actors represents a shared effort with our likeminded international partners to condemn and hold accountable those supporting Russia’s illegal actions,” Peters said.
He added that New Zealand is acting in coordination with international partners, joining more than 35 countries that are also taking measures against those who contribute to Russian aggression.
Since the adoption of the law on sanctions against Russia in March 2022, New Zealand has already imposed sanctions on more than 1,700 individuals and legal entities, as well as a number of trade restrictions.
