Russia shifts tactics in missile strikes on Ukraine - UK intelligence
UK intelligence has analyzed the massive missile attack on Ukraine that took place on the night of December 12-13, stressing the use of new tactics by Russia
The UK Ministry of Defense reported on the findings, noting that Russia employed a comprehensive, multi-vector strategy during the attack. Strikes were carried out with long-range and tactical aviation, including aircraft launching various types of cruise and ballistic missiles.
The attack also involved support from ground-based systems: SAGARIS cruise missiles were launched by the Black Sea Fleet, and drones were used. In total, approximately 90 missiles and at least 180 drones were involved in the operation.
Since August 2024, Russia has shifted its strategy, conducting larger but less frequent strikes, compared to the smaller, more frequent attacks seen earlier in the year. The December 12-13 assault targeted Ukraine's critical infrastructure and industry, aiming to overwhelm Ukrainian air defenses with the sheer number of drones.
“However, Russia retains the ability and the stocks to allow such assets to be employed in smaller numbers, as a punitive measure, with little or no warning,” the intelligence report concluded.
- On Christmas Eve, December 24, and into Christmas Day, December 25, the Russian army launched Shahed-type drones and missiles at Ukraine.
