Greece to send Sea Sparrow missiles to Ukraine - reports
The Greek government has agreed to send 24 Sea Sparrow missiles from its Navy and Air Force reserves to Ukraine. These missiles, which are nearly 40 years old, were deemed unnecessary for Greece's military operations
As reported by the local publication Ekathimerini, the Sea Sparrow is an American-made short-range anti-aircraft weapon, and Ukraine already possesses the necessary launchers for deployment.
This supply is part of Greece’s broader military aid to Ukraine, which includes artillery shells, weaponry, and ammunition.
“While the assistance aligns with Greece’s commitment to Ukraine’s defense efforts, it does not diminish Greece’s defense capabilities in the Aegean. Despite repeated requests from allies for advanced systems like the S-300 and Patriot missiles, Athens has firmly declined, citing security concerns and the absence of reliable replacement options,” Ekathimerini added.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis recently reiterated his country’s strong commitment to Ukraine’s defense during a European summit.
- President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Prime Minister of Greece Kyriakos Mitsotakis signed a bilateral security cooperation agreement in Brussels on October 17, under which Athens will help Kyiv train pilots and technicians for F-16 fighter jets.
