Russian attacks in Kharkiv region: UN confirms 45 civilians killed, 189 wounded
The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine (HRMMU) has confirmed at least 45 civilians killed and 189 others wounded as a result of Russia's offensive in the Kharkiv region
This is stated in the press release of the HRMMU on the UN website.
The HRMMU data is as of Sunday, May 26.
"The recent attacks on Kharkiv, including Saturday's strike on a major shopping center, continue a trend of increasing civilian casualties in Kharkiv and the Kharkiv region. Since the Russian Armed Forces launched a ground offensive in the Kharkiv region on May 10, the HRMMU has confirmed that 45 civilians have been killed and 189 injured in Kharkiv and the Kharkiv region," the document says.
The Head of the HRMMU, Danielle Belle, emphasized that civilians are the ones who die as a result of Russian attacks.
"The intensification of the Russian military offensive has resulted in significant civilian casualties over the past two weeks, particularly in Kharkiv and the Kharkiv region. The victims of the latest attacks have included employees of a hypermarket and a printing house, as well as shoppers," Belle said.
- On May 23, Russia launched a missile attack on Kharkiv, hitting one of the largest printing houses in Europe, Factor Printing, where books from almost all Ukrainian publishers are printed. The strike killed 7 people and injured 21 others.
- On May 24, the spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Elizabeth Trossell, said that at least 35 Ukrainian civilians were killed and 137 others were injured as a result of the offensive launched by Russia on May 10 in the Kharkiv region.
- On Saturday, May 25, Russia attacked the Epicenter hypermarket in Kharkiv with guided bombs. As of the evening of May 27, rescuers confirmed at least 16 people were killed and 49 injured.
