Why Ukraine can't publish number of POWs, missing persons: journalist explains
Media Initiative for Human Rights journalist Maria Klymyk has explained why Ukraine cannot publish the number of prisoners of war or missing persons
She expressed this opinion on Espreso TV.
"We must understand that now we cannot say for sure which people have been filtered and released, who has been captured, who has been simply deported somewhere and we simply cannot find this person anymore. We are still receiving unofficial confirmation that bodies are still being exhumed in Mariupol, both civilian and military, and they are simply being taken somewhere outside the city. We have no information, because no one identifies these people, no one is looking for them, and their relatives cannot report them because they are under occupation and it is dangerous for them," Klymyk said.
The journalist stressed that Ukraine cannot provide any specific figures on who is in captivity or missing.
"Neither Russia provides such data, nor can we calculate it in our databases, because we do not know whether all relatives have contacted the relevant authorities and submitted this information. What is happening now in the occupied territories is that most of them are under active hostilities, in Avdiivka, near Kharkiv, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia - there is no communication or information from there, so we cannot talk about any figures or even claim anything, because nowadays only a few people have a chance to leave," Klymyk concluded.
