Ukraine's Lviv receives key of European Youth Capital 2025
The team from Ukraine’s Lviv visited Ghent, Belgium, the current European Youth Capital, and officially received the symbolic key to the title
This event took place on Ukraine's Day of Dignity and Freedom.
Andrii Moskalenko, Lviv's First Deputy Mayor, said the title represents the courage and strength of Ukrainian youth, who have been fighting for freedom and progress. "We want 2025 to bring great change for young people, and for every Ukrainian to feel that their voice and actions matter," he said.
The Lviv team wore T-shirts with the message "russia kills UA youth. Like our Yarka Bazylevych." This was a tribute to Yaryna Bazylevych, a program manager for the Lviv European Youth Capital office, who was killed in a Russian shelling on September 4, 2024, along with her mother and sisters. Yulia Martyniuk, a communications manager for the project, said, "We continue her work and are determined to fulfill the dream she believed in."
Lviv won the title of European Youth Capital 2025 in 2022. The title is awarded annually by the European Youth Forum to one European city.
- During the night and early morning of September 4, Russia launched UAVs and missiles at Ukraine, with the primary impact targeting western Ukraine. The attack resulted in casualties, with people killed and injured in Lviv, and more injuries reported in Kryvyi Rih.
