Russia’s Shahed drone attack on Ukraine's Sumy kills 2, injures 12
On the night of November 21-22, Russian troops launched Shahed attack drones, striking the city of Sumy. Two people were killed, and 12 were injured
Attack on Sumy
According to Suspilne, explosions were reported in Sumy after 5:10 a.m. on November 22. At 5:23 a.m., the military confirmed the presence of a drone in the area.
“In Sumy, several powerful explosions occurred. One person has already died. Emergency services and ambulances are on-site,” reported city mayor Artem Kobzar.
Later, he announced a second fatality from the attack.
"At the site of the second explosion, another person has died. Emergency services, police, and medical teams are working. A crisis management center will be set up; location to be announced," Kobzar added.
At 5:49 a.m., he reported a renewed drone threat and air defense operations in the city.
The regional administration later confirmed that the attack targeted a residential area.
“Preliminarily, there are casualties. Assistance is being provided, and emergency rescue operations are underway. The consequences of the attack are being clarified,” the statement said.
By 6:46 a.m., the regional administration reported two fatalities and ten injuries of varying severity, which later increased to 12.
“Emergency workers rescued two injured from a heavily damaged residential building and handed them over to medics,” said the State Emergency Service.
Suspilne, citing the head of the regional administration Volodymyr Artyukh, reported that the drones used in the attack on Sumy were equipped with shrapnel.
"This weapon is designed to kill people, not destroy infrastructure. This is a first for Sumy," noted Artyukh.
Dnipropetrovsk region
The head of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Administration, Serhii Lysak, reported that early in the morning, Russian troops struck the Nikopol area with a kamikaze drone.
According to him, there were no casualties or injuries. The details of the aftermath are being clarified.
