Europe can no longer rely on NATO because of Trump — Macron

French President Emmanuel Macron stated that Europe can no longer rely on the North Atlantic Alliance, as the stance of U.S. President Donald Trump has weakened NATO

He shared this opinion in an interview with Le Monde.

According to Macron, the time has come for “strategic autonomy” because there are concerns in Europe about the Americans. The French president said that Europeans can no longer rely on NATO as before due to Trump’s approach.

Macron emphasized that the U.S. contribution to the North Atlantic Alliance accounts for 30%. At the same time, he believes that Europe will need ten years to free itself from U.S. influence in the Alliance by investing at both the national and European levels.

  • Earlier, Friedrich Merz, the candidate for German Chancellor whose CDU party won the elections, suggested that Europe might have to create its own military alliance, independent of the U.S., instead of relying on NATO.
