Ukrainian MP Merezhko nominates Trump for Nobel Peace Prize
Oleksandr Merezhko, Ukrainian MP from the Servant of the People party, has nominated newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize
Kyiv Independent reports.
The MP's decision is outlined in his letter to the Norwegian Nobel Committee.
"This move by Merezhko contradicts the statements of many opinion leaders in Ukraine, who criticized Trump for praising dictator Vladimir Putin and questioned continued U.S. support for Ukraine," the publication states.
In his letter, Merezhko wrote that he is convinced "Trump has made a significant contribution to global peace and has the potential to achieve even more in the future."
The MP specifically mentioned Trump’s mediation in brokering agreements between Israel and Muslim countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Sudan, during his first presidential term.
"Trump also laid the foundation for today's international coalition supporting Ukraine by demonstrating global leadership in supplying weapons to counter Russia's brutal and illegal war of aggression," Merezhko said.
In response to a question from the Kyiv Independent about the motivation behind his nomination, the MP said he wants to use it "as an opportunity to draw Trump’s attention so he can help Ukraine survive." At the same time, in his letter, Merezhko noted that Trump could help Ukraine achieve "a just, comprehensive, and sustainable peace based on the UN Charter and principles of international law."
