Military expert reveals hottest offensive direction in Russia's Kursk region
Dmytro Zhmailo, the co-founder and executive director of the Ukrainian Centre for Security and Cooperation, says that about 3,000 Russian soldiers are surrounded in the Kursk region
He shared this information on Espreso TV on August 23.
“After the Ukrainian Armed Forces destroyed three main bridges across the Seim River, about three thousand Russian servicemen were surrounded. Many are surrendering, as reported by the Ukrainian military, which is currently rotating in the Sumy region. However, some groups are fiercely resisting. For instance, fighting is ongoing in the village of Mala Loknya, where Russian forces have barricaded themselves in a women's prison and even enlisted its security personnel to help repel Ukrainian attacks,” Zhmailo said.
According to him, the Korenevo direction in the Kursk region remains the most intense. In recent days, the Ukrainian Armed Forces advanced through the villages of Vеtrenо and Nikipelovka. New settlements have been brought under control, including Zhuravlyovka, Kalinovka, Kruglenkoe, and the town of Krivyanoe, which has been partially surrounded.
"Events are developing less dynamically east of the town of Sudzha, particularly in the direction of Martynovka, where there is a slight advance, but overall progress is slower. Glushkovsky district is surrounded by the Seim River to the north, Ukrainian troops to the east, and the Ukrainian border to the west. We have brought this area under fire control, actively using FPV drones and artillery. Currently, the Defense Forces of Ukraine are trying to secure advantageous positions and strategic heights,” explained Zhmailo.
The military expert also added that the Defense Forces are seeking to bring major highways under fire control.
“In particular, the Kursk-Belgorod highway, to cut off the supply lines critical for the Russians to support the Kharkiv bridgehead, and the Kursk-Rylsk-Lgov highway, where the Russians are actively fortifying, but this area is already within range of our artillery,” emphasized Zhmailo.
