"Russia is waging war to destroy Ukraine": President of Lithuania calls for creation of court to investigate Russian war crimes

He said this during his speech at the UN General Assembly, Ukrinform reports.

"How can we tolerate the fact that a permanent member of the UN Security Council is waging a genocidal war of conquest and destruction? A country that brutally despises the rules-based world order. A country whose actions make it difficult to maintain peace and security on the entire planet," Gitanas Nauseda emphasized.

The President of Lithuania added that "behind the mask of an energy superpower hides a dangerous imperial state that is trying to occupy and annex its neighbors." In addition, the Russian Federation is looking for an excuse for annexation, using economic and energy blackmail, rewriting history and resorting to propaganda and disinformation.

According to Gitanas Nauseda, all UN members should respect the international order that has been created for decades, and decide what is tolerated, what is not, and what "red lines" the Russian Federation has crossed.

 He noted that the occupiers tortured and killed thousands of Ukrainians, millions of citizens had to evacuate.

"However, this war did not break the will of the courageous Ukrainian people to defend their country. It did not reduce their fighting spirit. The massacre in Bucha and Izyum did not bring them to their knees," noted Gitanas Nauseda.

He added that the international community should be even more active in strengthening Ukraine's stability and confronting difficulties, being inspired by the struggle of Ukrainians for freedom and democratic values.

Gitanas Nauseda reminded that the Russian Federation began violating the basic principles of the UN and undermining international security much earlier than February 24 - in particular, when it violated the sovereignty of Georgia and Moldova.

He also mentioned Russia's henchman - Belarus, which supports the war against Ukraine and carries out military attacks.

According to Gitanas Nauseda, the world community should unite to bring to justice those guilty of crimes against Ukraine.

"I call on the world community to convene a special court to consider war crimes. In addition, it is necessary to develop a mechanism to compensate the victims of these crimes," the Lithuanian president emphasized.
