Operating room destroyed in direct strike, running low on water and food – Ukrainian Marine on Azovstal
Serhiy Volyna, commander of the 36th Separate Marine Brigade, said that the situation at occupied Azovstal metallurgical plant in Mariupol was beyond humanitarian catastrophe
He described the situation in a CNN interview.
Reports have examined how Azovstal has become a symbol of Ukrainian resistance in Mariupol, which has been resisting Russian troops for almost two months. Volyna said that, due to the shelling of a field hospital, they were left without vital medical equipment, and also said that they "had very little water and food left."
“The operating room was hit directly. And all the operating equipment needed for surgery was destroyed, so we can't treat our wounded. We are now caring for the wounded with the tools we have. Our military medics are using all their skills to take care about them. But we also desperately need medicine. We have almost no medicine left," he said.
Asked about a possible evacuation plan, the brigade commander said he "didn’t know the details. I know that a mission has arrived in Zaporizhia and they are going to carry out a rescue operation," Volyna said.
He said that he was communicating with Volodymyr Zelensky. He added that the President told them "about the situation in Ukraine in general and around Mariupol" and "boosted their mood."
"We can't say exactly how long we can hold out. It all depends on the movement of our enemy, as well as luck. We have high hopes that we will be evacuated, that the President will be able to evacuate us or take us out by force. We have hope." he said.
