Aircraft carrier for drones to be built in Black Sea by Portugal’s request
The Portuguese Navy will build an aircraft carrier class ship in the Black Sea, which will be 100 to 130 metres long and 20 metres wide
This is reported by Defence Express.
The order for the aircraft carrier was made to the Dutch Damen Shipyards Group, which developed it.
The ship itself is classified by the Portuguese as a Multifunctional Naval Platform, but the developers consider it a Multi-Purpose Support Ships.
The company notes that the ship can have a tonnage of 7,000 to 9,000 tonnes and a length of 100 to 130 metres with a width of 20 metres.
The aircraft carrier will also have a flight deck with an offset "island" and a large under-deck space, as well as a docking chamber.
It is called a multi-platform carrier because it is supposed to be a carrier for drones rather than helicopters.
The drones should be vertical take-off or launched from a catapult.
It is noted that the cargo deck of 650 metres can accommodate about 12 standardised containers with a variety of equipment.
Also, this ship cannot be a universal amphibious assault ship because it can only take on board an additional 100 people or up to 142 people for temporary accommodation and reduce autonomy, which is up to 45 days. The ship's total crew consists of 48 people.
The ship is planned to be built at the Damen Shipyards Galați shipyard in Galati, Romania, in the lower Danube region, the Romanian newspaper Profit reports.
