80% Ukrainians support law banning Russia-linked religious groups - survey
An overwhelming majority of Ukrainians back the August law that bans religious organizations tied to Russia
This comes from survey results by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS).
According to the data, 80% of Ukrainians support the law that prohibits the Russian Orthodox Church. In contrast, 16% oppose the move, while 4% remain undecided.
The findings show that, across all regions, the vast majority support the law — ranging from 71% in the east to 83% in the west.
Additionally, 61% of Ukrainians believe there should be only one Orthodox Church in Ukraine. Around 16% disagree, and 20% are indifferent to the issue.
Of the options for unification, the most popular involves hierarchs and clergy from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) joining the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU).
Most respondents think that only hierarchs and clergy of the UOC MP who have no ties to Russia should be allowed to join. This option is supported by 47% overall and 66% of those who have a stance on the matter.
As a reminder, on August 24, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed the law banning the Russian Orthodox Church and related organizations in Ukraine.
