British Intelligence: Russia has changed its approach to war with Ukraine again
British intelligence experts have claimed that Russia has once again changed its tactics in the war against Ukraine: now, Russia's primary goal is probably to weaken the Ukrainian Armed Forces, not to seize territory
This is stated in a British intelligence report on Twitter.
According to analysts, since 2014, Russia's strategic goal in Ukraine has likely been consistent: to control its neighbor.
"Over 2014-2021, it pursued this objective through subversion, by fomenting an undeclared war in the Donbas, and by annexing Crimea. On 24 February 2022, Russia pivoted to a new approach and launched a full-scale invasion which attempted to seize the whole country and depose its government," the experts said.
Thus, the experts concluded that by April 2022, the Kremlin realized that it had failed in achieving this goal, so it focused on expanding the formalization of its "rule" over Luhansk, Donetsk, and southern regions of Ukraine.
"In recent weeks, Russia has likely changed its approach again. Its campaign now likely primarily seeks to degrade the Ukrainian military, rather than being focused on seizing substantial new territory. The Russian leadership is likely pursuing a long-term operation where they bank that Russia’s advantages in population and resources will eventually exhaust Ukraine," the British intelligence service concluded.

Earlier, military expert Serhiy Zgurets noted that Russia is using various units and private military companies to storm Bakhmut. However, the Ukrainian Armed Forces are conducting successful counterattacks and gradually seizing the initiative on the battlefield.
