Pentagon pledges full use of $5.8 billion in remaining aid for Ukraine
The U.S. Department of Defense is working with Congress to extend the presidential authority to allocate the remaining funds for assistance to Ukraine after the end of the fiscal year in late September
Deputy Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh shared the information during a briefing.
“We do plan to use the amount that's allocated for authority (for Ukraine - ed.),” she confirmed.
Singh said that there is $5.8 billion of unused aid for Ukraine.
According to her, the administration is working with Congress to extend that authority beyond the end of the fiscal year and assured that the US government intends to “use every dollar and cent.”
The deputy Pentagon spokeswoman explained that the defense department cannot provide military assistance at the moment because it has nothing to restore the stockpiles needed to maintain the level of U.S. combat readiness. At the same time, Singh emphasized that there is bipartisan agreement in Congress to support Ukraine.
- On September 14, the administration of US President Joe Biden asked Congress to extend the Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA) until 2025 to preserve about $6 billion for Ukraine after the end of the fiscal year on September 30.
- At the same time, the next day, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan announced a new package of US assistance to Ukraine until the end of September.
