British volunteer Samuel Newey killed fighting in Ukraine
A 22-year-old British volunteer, Samuel Newey, who fought alongside Ukrainian troops as part of a foreign detachment for over a year, was killed fighting in Ukraine
BBC reported the information.
The first to report the death of 22-year-old Samuel Newey, from Birmingham, was his brother Daniel.
"My little brother Sam was killed in action yesterday in Eastern Ukraine. I cannot put into words how broken I feel," he wrote on social media. "Sam you gave your life for people you never knew and acted with courage, morality and honour.”
After studying psychology at the University of Birmingham, Sam decided to join the war in Ukraine following the Russian full-scale invasion in February 2022.
Samuel had just turned 21 when he decided to travel to Ukraine "to push back against Russian Imperialism," Daneil said in a tribute to his brother.
BBC noted that Samuel came to Ukraine as a member of a foreign volunteer combat unit known as the Dark Angels, formed by a former member of the parachute regiment Daniel Burke. From the first days of the Russian invasion, the unit took part in fierce battles on the front lines, from Zaporizhzhia to eastern Ukraine.
In 2020, Samuel and his father Paul were charged with terrorism in connection with Daniel's decision to join the Kurdish militia to fight the Islamic State group. All charges were later dropped.
Paul Newey wrote on Facebook that his son was killed on Wednesday morning "in combat fighting for the Ukraine."
- In November, a British citizen, Jordan Gatley, was killed in action in Ukraine.
