Over 20 American volunteers missing in action in Ukraine war - media
Over 20 volunteers from the United States have gone missing in action in the war in Ukraine. At least five volunteers have been killed in the past six months
CNN reported the information.
According to the media, five American volunteers who joined the Ukrainian Armed Forces to fight against Russia have died in the past six months. The article states that two of them were repatriated from Russian-occupied territories to Ukrainian soil last week after prolonged negotiations.
“More than 20 Americans are missing in action on the front lines in Ukraine, with a spike in casualties over the past six months as foreigners fill urgent gaps in the country’s embattled defenses,” the article says.
Relatives of the missing U.S. citizens say they cannot bury them or officially declare them dead. They also spoke about the “suffering inflicted on them by Russian internet trolls online.”
The article notes that due to the intensity of combat on the front lines in Ukraine, the bodies of soldiers from both sides are often impossible to retrieve.
CNN reports that at the end of September last year, two Americans were killed near Pokrovsk. Their relatives claim that their bodies were never found.
- As of December 5, 2024, between 400 and 600 foreign nationals were being recruited into the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine each month.
