Western officials urge Europe to brace for U.S. election outcomes, resist compromise with Russia
Over 100 Western officials have issued an open letter, urging European nations to prepare for any outcome of the upcoming U.S. presidential election and to stand firm against potential deals with Russia
This was reported by hromadske, referencing the letter.
107 former senior diplomats, military leaders, intelligence heads, defense experts, and prominent politicians signed the letter.
In their view, Ukraine and its allies face "a twin strategic danger" as the U.S. presidential election approaches. One concern is the potential victory of Republican candidate Donald Trump.
"The incoming Trump administration will attempt to impose a deal with Russia detrimental to Ukraine’s interests, and to European security. This would leave Ukraine adrift from NATO and the EU, in a condition of fake neutrality – and Europe with a destabilizing geopolitical greyzone in the heart of the continent," the letter warns.
Alternatively, if Vice President Kamala Harris were to win, they foresee an administration likely to "continue with the policies of stasis and red lines, which have to date withheld the capabilities with which Ukraine could win the war."
"In both cases the parallels with the 1938 Munich Agreement are clear: it would be a false ‘peace’ achieved through European acquiescence in the dismembering of a sovereign state, and would leave that state unable to defend itself against future aggression, while buying an unacceptably small amount of time for our own rearmament. It would be likely to lead to a wider and even more destructive war," the officials argue.
They also propose a third path — one in which Ukraine survives as a sovereign nation and Russia faces defeat. These officials stress that Russia's inevitable victory is a myth, asserting that Ukraine can still prevail. They urge Europe to prepare a solid plan of action, regardless of the U.S. election results.
A few hours before the start of voting in the November 5 presidential election, the U.S. government warned of a large-scale disinformation campaign by Russia.
