Lithuania urges EU to bypass Hungary's veto on Ukraine aid
On Monday, May 27, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis criticized Hungary for blocking decisions on Ukraine and urged the EU to bypass Budapest's veto
This is according to Reuters.
"I think we have to be transparent as to what Hungary's position currently is. Almost all of our discussions and needed solutions and decisions by (the) EU are being blocked by just one country. So we have to start seeing this as a systematic approach towards any efforts by (the) EU to have any meaningful role in foreign affairs," Landsbergis said, criticizing Hungary's hindrance to any significant international efforts.
Landsbergis highlighted that Hungary is blocking the EU's decisions on military aid to Kyiv and the start of negotiations on Ukraine's, Georgia's, and Armenia's EU membership.
Diplomats note that Hungary's stance often aligns with Russia's foreign policy interests.
"We looked into this and apparently about 41% of resolutions by (the) EU on Ukraine have been blocked by Hungary. It has it has gone very, very far," Landsbergis added. "We have to find a way, really, as a community to work around this."
- On May 25, reports indicated that Hungary is delaying EU legislation allowing Ukraine to receive up to 2 billion euros for weapons from frozen Russian assets.
