US gives Ukraine smart bomb kits
The US Presidential Administration plans to transfer to Ukraine advanced electronic equipment capable of turning unguided aerial munitions into "smart bombs"
It is reported by The Washington Post.
Senior U.S. officials familiar with the matter claim the Ukrainian military can use "smart bombs" to hit Russian military positions with a high degree of accuracy, the article says.
The kits include global positioning devices to improve accuracy and can be attached to various weapons and aircraft to form Joint Direct Attack Munitions. The U.S. military has used this technology for bombs weighing up to 907 kg, typically applying it to bombers and fighters.
The publication notes that it has yet to be discovered whether U.S. President Joe Biden or any of his top national security advisers have approved the proposed transfer of JDAMs to Ukraine.
"A delivery of JDAMs would mark another significant step by Washington to help Ukraine repel the invading Russian force, providing a new way to target Russian units and headquarters," the newspaper writes.
Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) is a set of equipment based on GPS technology that turns simple free-fall bombs into all-weather adjusted ("smart") munitions.
