White House develops plan B to extend military aid to Ukraine - media
The White House is developing a "plan B" to extend the authority for providing Ukraine with $5.9 billion in military aid before the fiscal year ends in late September
As reported by Politico, this plan could enable Kyiv to continue receiving weapons without requiring action from the U.S. Congress. The article notes that the authorization for the Ukraine aid package passed in April allows the Pentagon to utilize its own stockpiles to support Kyiv. These funds are then used to replenish equipment in US arsenals, but this authority will expire on October 1.
"This new workaround - which requires the administration to declare that it will use the remaining aid in the coming months - will allow the Pentagon to continue to flow weapons to Kyiv. Yet under this method, the U.S. won’t be allowed to introduce new types of equipment that haven’t been in previous shipments," the publication explains.
Additionally, a representative from the U.S. Department of Defense, Lieutenant Colonel Charlie Dietz, emphasized that if the plan is implemented on time, "deliveries can continue beyond the fiscal year without any issues."
