Member of the Ukrainian Parliament and Co-Chair of the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China Oleksandr Merezhko told Espreso how Taiwan helps fight against Russian aggression and why Ukraine's victory is important

The Ukrainian lawmaker claims that every time democracy wins, autocracy fails. That is why Ukraine and Taiwan should support each other and develop bilateral relations.

“Both Taiwan and Ukraine are democratic states. And in the global struggle between democracy and freedom, we should be on the same side. We receive support from our Taiwanese friends, and they have introduced very serious sanctions against the aggressor state, against Russia. Economically, if we develop our relations, they might be beneficial and fruitful for both countries. We need to develop all aspects of relations between our states. And we also have a lot in common. Both Taiwan and Ukraine live in the shadow of some sort of empires that threaten their existence. That's why we should support each other. We are democracies, and by supporting each other, we strengthen democracy worldwide,” Merezhko said.

The co-chair of the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China added that Ukraine's victory is very important for Taiwan, which is under the threat of an attack by a powerful neighbor.

“If Ukraine fails and Russia succeeds, it will send a signal to China that it can start aggression against Taiwan. At the same time, when we (Ukrainians - ed.) attain victory over the aggressor, it will improve the situation around the Taiwan Strait. In a paradoxical strange way, despite geographical distance, both countries are related to each other,” Oleksandr Merezhko concluded.
