Ukraine's missile strike damages two bridges that lead to Crimea
On Sunday, August 6, 2023, the Chongar Bridge and the bridge in Henichesk, Kherson region, were hit by missiles fired by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Both bridges connect mainland Ukraine to the Crimean Peninsula. Sergey Aksyonov, the head of the occupation administrations of Crimea, along with Vladimir Saldo of the Kherson region and Vladimir Rogov of the Zaporizhzhia region, announced the missile strikes.
"There was a missile attack near the Chongar bridge in the north of Crimea. Some missiles were shot down by air defense forces, but the road bridge suffered damage. Repair work has already started, and no one was injured," Aksyonov said.
"For now, people can travel through the Armeniansk and Perekop highways,” he added.
According to Saldo, the Ukrainians "fired rockets at the bridge across the Henichesk Strait, which connects the city of Henichesk with the Arabat Spit. In total, 12 rockets were fired, and 9 were shot down by our air defense. One civilian passing by the bridge at the time of the attack was injured,” Saldo added.
As a result of the strike in Henichesk, there were alleged complications with gas supply, and the gas pipeline running next to the bridge was cut off, leaving over 20,000 residents without gas supply.
Saldo confirmed the strike on the Chongar bridge, stating it was carried out by "NATO missiles Storm Shadow," which damaged the bridge.
"Transport connection with Crimea continues through Chaplinka and Armyansk," he concluded.
"The Chongar checkpoint (Dzhankoy-Henichesk) is temporarily closed for traffic," informed Rogov, repeating the report about the missile attacks on the bridges in Chongar and Henichesk published by Saldo.
The Armed Forces of Ukraine officially confirmed the strikes on the mentioned bridges:
"Around 15:00, the Defense Forces of Ukraine struck two key communication routes of the invaders – Chongar and Henichesk automobile bridges."
"These bridges are vital logistical routes for the occupying forces in Ukraine, including the railway," military expert Ihal Levin commented.

On the morning of July 29, the Ukrainian Defense Forces launched another successful attack on the Chongar Bridge. The Armed Forces' effective action was confirmed by StratCom on the same evening.
