Ukraine's former defence minister explains why Russia's war may last years
Ukraine's former Defence Minister Andrii Zahorodniuk says that Ukraine needs to make a breakthrough in the war with Russia, or it could last years
Zahorodniuk said this in an interview with Radio HB.
"If things continue as they are now, they will be able to maintain the same intensity and numbers for years, because they have a lot of people. It will be a low-quality staff, that is, the staff will be poorly trained, unmotivated, and poorly managed. They can potentially not increase their number, but maintain it for years", Zagorodniuk said.
He added that the situation is similar with weapons and military equipment.
"There will be no more high-tech weapons, but they will have a lot of old weapons that can perform some tasks. They have a huge amount of old equipment in their warehouses. This old equipment is in an inoperable form. They will not be able to double it. But they are constantly carrying out work on its restoration. They will put them on duty, and then transport them to us", Zagorodniuk said.
He emphasized that in order to prevent such a scenario, Ukraine needs to introduce a turning point in the war.
"If we don't reverse the situation due to the technological advantage that our partners will give us, then unfortunately we can still see this war for quite a long time. It could last for a few years, and then it could turn into a less intense conflict, which could also last for a very long time", Zahorodniuk predicted.
He emphasized that Ukraine is not satisfied with this situation.
"This situation does not suit us, we are not interested in this. A long war for years adds absolutely nothing to us.Therefore, it is critical for us now to agree with our partners on the provision of weapons sufficient for counter-offensive actions. This is absolutely possible", Zahorodniuk is convinced.
