Ukraine could win within year with Western fighter jets – former top US general
Ben Hodges, a retired general and former commander of US forces in Europe, believes that the West should provide Ukraine with combat aircraft that can contribute to Kyiv's military victory by the end of the year
He said this in an interview with DW.
According to Hodges, without Western fighters, Ukraine's victory is also possible, but in this case, the military defeat of Russia could take three to five years, given the current level of Western support.
"The sooner we deliver them the capability to achieve a decisive outcome, the sooner that [the war] could be over," he said, arguing that Ukraine could drive Russian troops from its territory by the end of the year if it receives additional support.
In particular, the US general also explained that Western concerns over runway preparation and compatibility do not make it "unfeasible" to provide Kyiv with the "capability" to use the aircraft. He particularly praised Britain for its leadership in providing various forms of military support to Ukraine.
In addition, Hodges also stated that he believes that the only "red line" for the US support of Ukraine is the presence of "boots on the ground."
In particular, he emphasized that Ukraine must return Crimea to preserve the "international rules-based order" and the UN Charter. Hodges also added that it is important for Ukrainian ports to maintain access to the Sea of Azov through Crimea.
Assessing the potential for a new full-scale Russian offensive, Hodges noted that Moscow does not have enough armored forces for this and such an offensive would not change the "overall operational environment" in Ukraine.
Instead, Ukraine "has enough to limit the Russian success," but it would still be "costly" in terms of casualties and ammunition, Hodges said.

On February 8, Deputy Representative of the US to the United Nations, Ambassador Richard Mills, underscored that the supply of weapons to Ukraine contributes to the self-defense of the country, and is not an obstacle to ending the war.
