"These data are just tip of iceberg": UN says at least 8,000 civilians killed in Ukraine
Since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, at least 8,000 civilians have been killed and more than 13,000 others have been injured
The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights stated this in the press release.
“These numbers, which we are publishing today, lay bare the loss and suffering inflicted on people since Russia’s armed attack began on 24 February last year… And our data are only the tip of the iceberg," said UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk.
“Amid electricity and water shortages during the cold winter months, nearly 18 million people are in dire need of humanitarian assistance. Some 14 million people have been displaced from their homes,” Türk said.
According to him, both the young and the old suffered, but it was the elderly who most often stayed in the combat zone and hid in damp cellars for months.
"According to the UN Human Rights Office’s monitoring mission in Ukraine, of the adult civilian casualties whose sex was known, men accounted for 61.1 percent of civilian casualties and women for 39.9 percent," the press release said.
The most common causes of death were explosive injuries caused by artillery shells, cruise and ballistic missiles, and air strikes.
According to the Ombudsman's Office, 345 children have been reported missing in Ukraine since the start of the full-scale war with Russia.
