No Trump-Putin meeting in 2025, Russian opposition expert Morozov says

Oleksandr Morozov, a political analyst based in Prague, expressed in an interview with Espreso his opinion that there is no reason for a bilateral meeting between Trump and Putin in 2025

Putin cannot attend the Munich Security Conference or the G7 summit, and his only possible appearance could be at the G20 summit in November 2025, Morozov told Espreso TV.

"Donald Trump has announced intentions for a quick end to the war Russia is waging against Ukraine. However, there is no concrete plan from Trump or his closest associates on how to achieve this—not within 24 hours, as he claimed, nor even within 100 days or six months," said Morozov.

According to him, consultations in early 2025 will likely involve China, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, with whom Trump has cooperated previously.

‘It is important for us to see what Donald Trump's first foreign visits will be like. Now, Trump made it clear at his press conference that he will not go to Canada, and he will not go to Mexico, which is obvious. He also made it clear that he will not go to Denmark, and thus most likely not to any of the Scandinavian countries. It is difficult to imagine such a visit if you publicly threaten to take Greenland away from Denmark,’ the political analyst commented.

Morozov emphasized the significance of Trump’s initial foreign visits: whether he will follow his previous pattern of visiting Saudi Arabia and Israel or focus on Europe, potentially visiting Poland. Alternatively, he may prioritize building relations with China.

"In my opinion, there will be no Trump-Putin meeting in 2025—not in the first half or at all—because a bilateral summit lacks purpose. And the big question is, where can Trump and Putin meet on the sidelines? After all, Putin cannot participate in either the Munich conference or the G7 summit. A potential meeting on the sidelines of another event, such as the G20, remains uncertain," Morozov concluded.

  • On January 7, Trump said Putin intended to meet with him. However, he ruled out a possible meeting before the inauguration.
  • The special representative for the settlement of the war in Ukraine, retired General Keith Kellogg, has the task of ending the war within 100 days of Donald Trump's inauguration.
  • On January 10, Reuters reported that US President-elect Donald Trump said that preparations are underway for his meeting with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
