Slinger anti-drone systems: low-cost solution for downing Shahed drones

Valerii Riabykh, a military expert and development director at Defense Express, says that the Slinger system destroys small-sized enemy air targets in the price range of USD 100 to USD 1,000, depending on the type of ammunition

He shared the information on Espreso TV.

"There is information about the supply of Slinger anti-drone systems from Australia to Ukraine. It is said that an additional 10 systems will be supplied, which will be installed on American gun trucks. The delivery of such systems is a very positive signal. These systems will be supplied to us jointly with the United States, and the funds were allocated earlier as part of the assistance provided," the military expert noted.

Valerii Riabykh said that the weapon has a 30 mm automatic cannon, a sighting optic, a modern radar that allows detecting small air targets, and is combined with a control system.

"The valuable thing about this system is that it makes it possible to shoot down enemy Shahed drones at a cheap price. For example, we can now use expensive missiles costing tens or sometimes hundreds of thousands of dollars, while Shahed costs tens of thousands of dollars. And the Slinger system can destroy similar targets at a cost of USD 100 to USD 1000, depending on the types of ammunition used. So, this is a very good system and it should be noted that such systems have already been contracted in other areas. In order not to go into details, I will say that we will receive more than a hundred such systems somewhere," Riabykh summarized.

  • On October 2, the Danish Ministry of Defense announced that the government had allocated DKK 100 million (EUR 13.4 million) for a joint European purchase of 155-mm artillery shells for Ukraine, which are expected to be delivered in 2024 as part of the European Defense Agency.

  • Germany also provided Ukraine with a new military assistance package to combat Russian aggression. It includes protective goggles, satellite communication terminals, and tank tractors. Berlin also handed over 14 BV 206 all-terrain vehicles and ammunition for grenade launchers to Kyiv.
