ICC representatives inspect Russian torture sites set up during Kharkiv region occupation
ICC and Ukrainian Prosecutor's Office representatives inspect torture sites set up by Russian troops during Kharkiv region occupation
Ukraine's Prosecutor General's Office reported the information.
In total, law enforcement officers found 25 torture chambers in Kharkiv region, said Spartak Borysenko, head of the Department for Combating Crimes Committed in the Context of Armed Conflict at the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor's Office. The evidence collected shows that the detainees were subjected to torture, physical, psychological and sexual violence.
“People were hardly fed and given only industrial water to drink. They cut teeth, tied wrists and used a crane with a metal hook to lift people's bodies into the air, pulled out nails, applied current through wires tied to different parts of the body, and beat them with rubber sticks,” the report says.
ICC prosecutors, as part of a broader investigation into crimes in Ukraine, are collecting and analyzing evidence of civilian torture in Kharkiv region.
“Our fruitful cooperation with the ICC continues. The main focus should be on criminals of all levels for whom there is sufficient evidence to bring them to justice, regardless of rank or position. We are doing everything possible to bring the criminals to justice,” emphasized Yuriy Belousov, Head of the Department for Combating Crimes Committed in the Context of Armed Conflict.
