Zelenskyy: Russia's presence at Zaporizhzhia NPP must end
On August 19, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reiterated that Russia is threatening the world with a potential catastrophe at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) while using its territory as a launch site for attacks on Nikopol and surrounding areas
He posted the statement on social media.
President Zelenskyy pointed out that for over two years, Russian forces have occupied the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, the Zaporizhzhia NPP. He emphasized that Russia's presence poses a severe threat to radiation safety not only for Ukraine but also for Europe and the world.
"Russia is blackmailing the world with the risk of a disaster at ZNPP. They use the plant's territory as a base to launch attacks on Nikopol and nearby communities, and they store military equipment and ammunition on the ZNPP grounds. Only the return of the plant to Ukrainian control will ensure full adherence to safety standards and bring the situation around ZNPP back to normal," the president stressed.
He further reminded that Ukraine has upheld the highest standards of nuclear facility safety for decades and will continue to do so, but the criminal Russian presence at ZNPP must end for this to happen.
- On August 16, Russian propaganda began pushing the narrative that Ukraine was preparing to strike the Zaporizhzhia and Kursk nuclear power plants. The Center for Countering Disinformation stated that Russia might be preparing a terrorist attack involving a nuclear provocation.
