Zaporizhzhia NPP at risk of blackout again due to Russian shelling
On Thursday, April 4, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, currently under temporary occupation, faced the threat of blackout once more as a result of Russian shelling
This is according to Energoatom.
"At 10:06 a.m. today, April 4, 2024, the PL-330kV external overhead line 'Zaporizhzhia TPP — Ferosplavna,' which provided power to the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP from the Ukrainian power system, was disconnected due to Russian shelling," reported Energoatom.
Currently, the Zaporizhzhia NPP relies solely on the PL-750kV "Dniprovska" power transmission line to connect to the Ukrainian power system, recently restored by Ukrainian energy companies.
"This presents another serious threat to the safety of the Zaporizhzhia NPP. If this last line of connection with the domestic power grid is severed, the plant will face another blackout, violating safety protocols," explained Energoatom.
Since the beginning of the Russian occupation, the Zaporizhzhia NPP has experienced eight complete blackouts and one partial blackout, activating emergency diesel generators and safety systems.
- Following Russian shelling on March 22, the occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP was previously at risk of blackout until power workers restored the damaged power line.
