He shared his opinions with Espreso TV.

"In the Pokrovsk direction, units from the Russian Federation's Center military group, which were redeployed in October 2023, are being used. These are units of the 2nd and 41st Combined Arms Armies of the Russian Federation, as well as the 90th Tank Division. They also have the support of the Russian South troop group. That is, the largest grouping is concentrated there, where 2 groups of Russian troops are simultaneously concentrated. They are moving not only along the T-05-11 highway towards Novohrodivka. It is Novohrodivka and Hrodivka that are an obstacle on the way to Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad," explained Kovalenko.

According to the military and political observer, the Russian forces have other tasks, they have to form flanks. That is, Russian forces have the task of reaching the left bank of the Vovcha River, which they have not been able to do for quite some time.

"The Russians are aiming to secure the northern flank, which is villages and settlements along the Kazenyi Torets line. This will allow them to create conditions for an offensive on Vozdvyzhenka. By capturing Vozdvyzhenka, they will try to reach the 05-04 road. All these actions are aimed at creating conditions for the medium-term advance to Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad. In the short term, it is to improve conditions for an offensive campaign in Toretsk and the Toretsk agglomeration," Kovalenko added.

  • Over the past day on August 5, 133 combat clashes took place at the front. Russian troops attacked the Pokrovsk direction most intensively, where Ukrainian defenders repelled 41 attacks.
  • Military expert Serhiy Zgurets noted that there is a section between Niu York and Zalizne that is held by the Ukrainian military, but the Russian army is trying to cover the area from both sides, posing a threat of encirclement.
