Russian opposition leader claims Russian Shahed deliberately damaged his home in Kyiv region
On the night of August 1, debris from a Shahed drone fell and damaged the home of Russian opposition leader Ilya Ponomarev in the Kyiv region. Ponomarev claims it was a deliberate strike
Ukrainska Pravda, RBC-Ukraine, and OBOZ.UA first reported the information, citing their own sources.
At night, the Russian army tried to attack the Kyiv region with Shahed UAVs. Falling debris from the drones injured two people. Media reports, citing law enforcement agencies, identified the injured individuals as opposition leader Ilya Ponomarev and his wife.
At the same time, Ponomarev himself commented on the situation on social media, but did not provide any details.
“Today seems to be my second birthday. The fifth attempted attack was the most unconventional and most successful, and it was difficult to defend against. But damn them! I'll write the details later,” he wrote.
Later, the oppositionist told the Kyiv24 TV channel that Russia had tried to attack his house for the second day in a row.
He believes the attack was deliberate and that it was not debris but the drone itself that struck the house. He stated, "It has a very distinctive, very loud sound. Then it came and exploded right under the window. It was not shot down. I'm 100% sure it was not shot down; the air defense system did not engage it at all."
What is known about Ponomarev
Ilya Ponomarev is a Russian opposition activist and former member of the A Just Russia party faction in Russia's State Duma.
In 2014, he was the only MP who voted against the annexation of Crimea and its “accession” to Russia. He later moved to Ukraine.
However, in 2019, Ponomarev was granted Ukrainian citizenship.
