New Ukrainian ballistic missile can reach Moscow and Sochi: what is its range?
Ukrainian long-range weapons can hit deep into Russian territory, and there are plenty of other high-value targets besides the Kremlin
Defense Express, citing Mykhailo Podolyak, an advisor to the head of the President’s Office, reports that a new Ukrainian ballistic missile has a range of 600-700 km.
It's worth noting that when President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the first successful test of a domestic ballistic missile on August 27, 2024, he did not specify the range of this missile.
However, back in August 2023, the president mentioned the successful use of Ukraine's long-range weaponry at a distance of 700 kilometers. By November, it was clarified that this referred to a missile, not a drone, but without specifying whether it was a cruise or ballistic missile.
This capability implies the potential to target significant locations deep within Russia, including within the 600-700 km range, which could reach Moscow itself, along with other equally important targets.
For instance, the strategic aviation airfield Engels near Saratov, tied to Russian strategic bombers, falls within this range. So does the base of the remnants of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in Novorossiysk, as well as Sochi, and numerous other strategic sites that might be of greater importance than striking the Kremlin.
However, there's a possibility that Mykhailo Podolyak, who also mentioned the Palianytsia missile-drone—a jet-powered drone that functions as a cruise missile—might have misspoken. Palianytsia has a range of about 600-700 km, as indicated by a video map and official video footage.
One could even speculate, albeit far-fetched, that the Palianytsia might actually be a missile-drone with a rocket engine rather than a jet engine. But this raises questions about the visual depiction of the device, as the fixed wings suggest it's a subsonic aircraft.
