UK offers to mediate transfer of German Taurus missiles to Ukraine
The UK suggests 'ring exchange' for transferring Taurus missiles to Ukraine, offering additional Storm Shadow missiles
British Foreign Secretary David Cameron said this in an interview with the Süddeutsche Zeitung, RBC-Ukraine reports.
"We are determined to closely cooperate with our German partners on this, as well as on all other matters, to assist Ukraine," he said.
Cameron explained that he envisions a potential ring exchange. For instance, Germany would transfer Taurus missiles to Britain, and in turn, London would provide additional Storm Shadow missiles to Ukraine.
"We are ready to consider all options to achieve the maximum effect for Ukraine. However, we will not disclose any details and will not inform our opponents of our plans," the minister emphasized.
Cameron also denied that the transfer of cruise missiles could lead to escalation.
"It is absolutely possible to establish restrictions on the use of this weaponry to ensure that it does not contribute in any way to escalation," said the British Foreign Secretary, adding that London trusts Ukraine's assurances.
- On February 22, members of the German parliament voted in favor of a recommendation to provide Ukraine with long-range Taurus missiles. Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz earlier this week extensively justified his refusal to supply Taurus missiles to Ukraine. He noted that "Taurus has a range of 500 kilometers, and if used incorrectly, it could hit a target somewhere in Moscow." Additionally, according to the Chancellor, sending German troops to Ukraine to ensure control over the use of missiles would be necessary, but this is ruled out. Scholz fears that this could indirectly drag Germany into a war in Ukraine.
