NATO to enhance military presence in Baltic Sea following damage to submarine cables
The North Atlantic Alliance will increase its presence in the Baltic Sea after incidents involving damage to submarine cables
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte wrote this on the X social network.
He noted that he had discussed with Finnish President Alexander Stubb the country's investigation into possible sabotage in the context of incidents with submarine cables.
“I expressed my full solidarity and support. NATO will enhance its military presence in the Baltic Sea,” Rutte wrote.
On December 25, Finnish national grid operator Fingrid announced that the Estlink 2 submarine power cable connecting Finland and Estonia had been damaged.
Subsequently, the Finnish police launched an investigation to determine whether a foreign vessel was involved in the damage to the Estlink 2 submarine electric cable, and President Alexander Stubb subsequently called for countering the shadowy Russian fleet.
Later, it was reported that Finland detained the Eagle S tanker suspected of damaging a communication cable, allegedly from the Russian shadow fleet.
