Basing new ship Hetman Ivan Mazepa in Ukraine is dangerous
Captain 1st Rank of the Ukrainian Navy Reserve, Andriy Ryzhеnko believes that basing the new ship Hetman Ivan Mazepa in Ukraine would be too risky
He said this on the Espreso TV channel.
"Firstly, this ship will not be able to enter the Black Sea until the end of hostilities, until our victory, so its contribution to the war is limited. Secondly, this ship can be used in the near sea area, where our task is to protect ports and restore sea communications. But in such tight waters, it is vulnerable because of its size. It will be easy to detect, and air defense will not help it. It will be able to shoot down a few targets, but the enemy knows this and will send more," Ryzhenko explained.
According to Captain 1st rank of the Ukrainian Navy Reserve, the new Hetman Ivan Mazepa ship needs a basing point, and it should be deep waters. The main purpose of the ship is to search for and destroy submarines. It can also launch missile strikes.
"During the two years of the war, it became obvious that the size of ships in very confined waters is a vulnerable factor. We can see this in the example of Russian ships when they were not ready for asymmetric threats. Until the near sea area is cleared, it is even dangerous to anchor such a ship at a home base in Ukraine," Ryzhenko emphasized.
