Ukraine loses "about half" of territories it controlled in Kursk region - media
As of December 2024, the Ukrainian army has lost about half of the previously controlled territories in the Kursk region. The reverses began when Ukraine swapped out elite units for less powerful ones
The Economist reports about it.
According to the publication, a transition to a defensive position took place in all units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The commander of the artillery of the 82nd Air Assault Brigade, Major Ivan Bakrev, noted that the Russians had strengthened their positions even before the appearance of the North Korean military on the front.
"The Russians enjoy a “massive” advantage in almost everything—men, artillery, machines—and switch between mechanised and infantry assaults to powerful effect. Ukraine has already lost “about half” of the territories it once controlled," he explained.
According to him, Ukraine had to face serious problems after replacing elite units with less trained troops in September, which, in his opinion, was a mistake.
Currently, the Russian forces are trying to push back the Ukrainian Armed Forces, attacking both on the eastern and western flanks.
The Economist also noted that among the reasons for the activation of the Russian military is the approaching inauguration of Donald Trump. At the same time, Putin seeks to resolve the situation with the Kursk region by January 20 in order to avoid discussing this issue at the international level.
