F-16s would protect Ukraine's cities from Russian KABs and ballistic missiles- Defense Express
There are no legal obstacles, the Netherlands is ready to supply 24 F-16 fighters and 7 engines to Ukraine
Valeriy Ryabykh, a military expert and development director at Defense Express, shared his opinions with Espreso TV.
"The arrival of the F-16 would provide protection for cities that are currently suffering from KAB bombs. We see that the occupiers are increasingly using missiles from tactical aircraft. They are targeting civilian areas. In recent days, there have been many tragedies due to the fall of enemy missile fragments on civilian objects, including residential buildings," he said.
The Netherlands has officially approved the supply of 24 F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine. This is a significant event for Ukraine, but the decision was made a long time ago, Ryabykh said.
"Now this letter, in accordance with the formal procedures that exist in the Netherlands, is sent collectively from the ministries involved. These are primarily the Dutch Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Trade and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. There is an interesting clarification: the letter itself says that, at Ukraine's request, there will be no further public communication on the eve of the first delivery of the F-16 and the Chamber will be informed in confidence. All formal procedures are ready, and the Netherlands is ready to transfer 24 aircraft and 7 engines to Ukraine. There are no legal obstacles," he explained.
President Zelenskyy says that July 2024 may bring Ukraine even more capabilities, in particular in defending its skies from Russia: "Against the backdrop of the news about the supply of air and missile defense systems, this adds even more intrigue. It is possible that we are talking about the arrival of F-16s in Ukraine, which could significantly enhance our capability to counter air threats," Ryabykh said.
- On July 2, Dutch Defence Minister Kajsa Ollongren said that 24 Dutch F-16 fighters would soon be delivered to Ukraine. The relevant permit has already been issued.
