Russia strikes at one of world's largest coke producers in Donetsk region
On the morning of June 16, the occupying Russian army attacked a phenol plant in New York, Donetsk region, one of the world's largest producers of coke products
Lawmaker Musa Mahomedov reported this.
“The plant is over a hundred years old. It survived the revolution, the civil war. It was evacuated during the Second World War, returned and resumed operations. The phenol plant was one of the world's largest producers of coke products - naphthalene and phenol-cresols,” the politician wrote.
“The plant is currently going through the most difficult time in its existence - it is being 'liberated' by our crazy neighbors,” he added.
The phenol plant in New York was built in 1916 and put into operation in 1917. It was destroyed twice. It is now part of the Metinvest Group. Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Donbas in 2014, the phenol plant's chemical waste storage facility has been caught between the positions of the Ukrainian army and the invading forces. As a result, environmentalists have repeatedly voiced concerns about the real threat of an environmental disaster if parts of the production facility are damaged. The industrial site is also a high-risk facility.
