Risk of Russia using nuclear weapons against Ukraine has now decreased - Olaf Scholz
The risk of Putin using nuclear weapons in the war against Ukraine has decreased in response to international pressure.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated this, writes Reuters publication.
"Russia has stopped threatening to use nuclear weapons. As a reaction to the fact that the international community has marked a red line," Scholz said.
He added that despite the deep differences, it is essential that the dialogue with the Kremlin continues.
Scholz said Putin should stop the war, but after that, he will be ready to talk to Russia about arms control in Europe, adding that this was also proposed before the war.
The critics in Kyiv and elsewhere in Europe said that Germany was too restrained. But after the United States, Scholz claimed that Germany had been one of Ukraine's most prominent supporters, including in arms supplies.
"We are doing everything possible to prevent a direct war between Russia and NATO. Such a conflict would only have losers all over the world," the German Chancellor said.
According to the German leader, Europe's largest economy will survive the winter well and remain a strong and prosperous industrial nation, as it will reduce its dependence on Russian energy carriers.
"Now, we make the necessary decisions to become independent in the long term. Starting in 2045, we want to be completely climate neutral and produce our energy without natural gas, coal or oil," Scholz said.
