Putin focuses on strengthening economic control over Belarus - ISW
Russian President Vladimir Putin is likely to focus on strengthening economic control over Belarus
This was reported by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
It is noted that Putin met with President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko in Moscow on April 5-6. They discussed issues of allied integration in the field of security, economy, defense, culture, and humanitarian issues.
Thus, Putin and Lukashenko announced, in particular, the creation of a joint system for indirect taxes. They are also planning measures to form general standards for Russian and Belarusian industrial enterprises and efforts to unify trade legislation in both countries.
Politicians also noted that Russian and Belarusian officials are focusing on import substitution measures and support for the microelectronics industry. This is likely done to mitigate Western sanctions, analysts say.
Putin, for his part, emphasized that officials of both countries are continuing the process of creating a joint oil and gas market. They are also working on an agreement to create a single electricity market.
During the meeting, Putin and Lukashenko also discussed strengthening economic cooperation to support their ongoing efforts to reassure their people that Western sanctions will not have long-term consequences.
In this way, the Kremlin is probably trying to integrate the Belarusian defense industry into its own defense industry as much as possible, the Institute believes.
