Putin becomes more concerned about his image in Russia
Analysts of the Institute for the Study of War explained why the Russian president appears in public more often. One of the reasons is that Putin began to think more about his popularity and image in Russia
The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) states on its website.
Experts note that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s public appearances have become more frequent in Russian cities as well as making vague statements about invasion of Ukraine. ISW reminded that during 10 months of full-scale invasion, public activity of the head of Russian Federation was absent.
According to the ISW, on December 23, Putin visited the Instrument Design Bureau in the Tula region, which produces weapons. He reportedly planned to visit the Uralvagonzavod machine-building factory in Nizhny Tagil on the same day, but the event was canceled at the last minute.
"Such appearances are likely a part of the Kremlin’s effort to present Putin as a wartime leader and regain the dominant narrative in the domestic information space as Russia heads into the second year of the war.
Putin consistently relied on in-person appearances throughout his rule, which helped him to create an image of an all-seeing and ever-present ruler," analysts reported.
Perhaps Vladimir Putin is trying to create favorable conditions in the information space ahead of the next presidential election in Russia in early 2024, experts say.
