Prisoners include mothers, pregnant women: Zelenska urges UN Secretary General to speed the release of women and doctors from Russian captivity
Ukraine's First Lady Olena Zelenska held a meeting with UN Secretary General António Guterres, during which she noted the need to protect children from Russian aggression and called for the release of Ukrainian women from Russian captivity
Zelenska reported this in Telegram.
The meeting took place within the framework of a visit to New York on the occasion of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal also participated in it.
Zelenska called on the UN Secretary General to assist in the release of Ukrainian women and doctors from Russian captivity, who, according to the Geneva Conventions, are not combatants.
"Among the captives are pregnant women and mothers of very small children. We need all the world's support to free them. I believe that we will get it and return our heroic Ukrainian women to their families and homeland," Zelenska emphasized.
Zelenska noted that Guterres' decision to include the war in Ukraine in this year's report on the impact of armed conflicts on children is fundamentally important for Ukraine.
"This will ensure proper monitoring by the UN system of crimes against children committed by the Russian occupiers in our country every day," Zelenska explained.
She also thanked Guterres for his personal efforts to support Ukraine and noted the active cooperation with the UN special representative on sexual violence in conflicts Pramila Patten and other UN structures: UNICEF, UNPFA, UN Women.
"The activities of the UN are now more necessary than ever. After all, right now the Organization must prove itself as a world arbiter. Our goal is to bring all those guilty of crimes to justice," added Zelenska.
