Over 10 countries increase trade volume with Russia after February 24
After Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, some countries only strengthened trade ties with the aggressor country. In particular, these are Belgium, the Netherlands, Japan, and Spain
This is reported by the New York Times.
The publication reports that international trade with Russia has flourished this year, even after the countries imposed sanctions. However, Moscow's alliances began to change.
According to an analysis of trade data conducted by the New York Times, the volume of Russian imports fell sharply after the sanctions and trade restrictions took effect. But several countries, in particular China and Turkey, only deepened their relations with Russia in 2022.
The journalists warned that the data they analyzed is published with a delay, so the picture they give is inherently retrospective.
“In 2020, Russia imported USD 220 billion of products from the rest of the world, including cars and car parts, medicine and computers, buying heavily from China, Germany, Korea and elsewhere,” the article says.
As the war progresses, the world's response to it leads to marked changes in international trade flows. The data show that Russia's long-standing economic ties with Europe are gradually loosening, and new alliances are being formed due to the redirection of goods to other countries.
The decisions of global companies to stop operations in Russia also affected container ships filled with foreign goods - they do not enter the port of St. Petersburg, the main point of communication between the Russian Federation and the rest of the world. And inflation and economic uncertainty are forcing Russian consumers to cut back on products that are still on store shelves.
