Former Ukraine's Foreign Minister, diplomat Pavlo Klimkin, in an interview with Serhii Rudenko, host of the Verdict program on Espreso TV, told how Russian aggression against Ukraine has affected the world

On February 24, 2022, we witnessed the collapse of the security system that existed in the world before. Putin and his team did everything possible to challenge not only Ukraine, but also the whole world, crushing the security system that existed until now and the architecture of coexistence on the globe. Was the world ready for this?

In fact, there was no security system. Formally, of course, there were all these attributes that were built after World War II. Today, the UN is one of the most impotent organizations in the world. The United Nations has its Charter, thanks to which Russia is in the Security Council, has the right of veto and permanent status. The world has completely changed. And those who could not maintain this security system are jointly responsible for it. We are waiting to work on the bugs.

“Our war is the first war of the 21st century. We have launched the process of building the 21st century.”

The first result of this is that we believed in ourselves as a nation and as a state, while the Russians did not.

We realized that compromises for the sake of compromises lead nowhere, and the Russians believe that imperialist policies can be applied again and again. It is very important that Ukraine, together with the countries of the West, put Putin in his place. Therefore, there is no security system and it cannot exist without Ukraine.

The future security system will be created. Its formation can be revolutionary: everything will collapse and "black swans" will come, or it will be gradually revolutionary. And it is very important to understand whether the world will be built on the rivalry of democracy against autocracy or the countries of the West against the East. If we talk about autocracy and democracy, then this is a system of evil and good. And it is our mission to show the world where there is good and where there is evil.  Our mission is not easy because we pay a very high price for it.

And there can be a system when there will be rivalry between the countries of the West and the East, and then it will be a system of "own - foreign". No matter how the security system evolves, the important thing is that we will always be on the side of good.

There will be new security systems, where there will be either an expanded NATO or a new system with the participation of the democratic countries of Asia. And we will be part of this system. Because everyone understood that Ukrainians are people who are ready to go forward to the end for their values.  And this is exactly what the world is missing so much right now.

“Amid the failure of the UN, we witnessed the creation of a new platform for solving security issues, in particular, issues related to the protection of Ukraine from Russian aggression, this is Ramstein,”

which takes place at a German air base in the USA, as a result of which 40 ministers from different countries joined. There, people talk about what needs to be done today, what needs to be done tomorrow, and what needs to be done the day after tomorrow. And on the basis of this partnership, something completely new can emerge. It is very important that now it is not only the North Atlantic Alliance, but that it is an alliance of all democratic countries that are ready to invest in the struggle.

On September 30, 2022, Ukraine submitted an application for accelerated accession to NATO. At the end of 2022, President Emmanuel Macron said that he had doubts about Ukraine's membership in NATO. In your opinion, apart from the war, what prevents us from joining NATO?  Despite the fact that we are already fulfilling one of the points, since our country is moving to NATO standards and uses NATO weapons.

Only one thing - fear. But not our fear, but the fear of some Western countries and politicians.  And they will bide their time and assure us that we should wait until Putin's regime reboots and only then can we move forward. And this is a fundamental mistake.

As for Macron, I urge you to listen to his words, but not to take it as the absolute truth. Everything should be predictable for them, and life cannot be like that. And we now understand that we need to value ourselves and our relatives and the country, and we have to teach this to our neighbors in the West. Goodness should be toothy. It also has the ability to fight for itself. And we showed that.

Putin and Lavrov say that we are witnessing how the world is moving towards the creation of multipolarity. How do you rate these statements? And do Putin and Lavrov appear to the world as great geostrategists?

They would rather watch that Russia does not become multipolar. And so that it does not become an empire that did not happen, which we all want from the bottom of our hearts, but what is even more, what we have to work on.  Will it be some sort of collapse in Russia or will it be a reboot? And this is a very difficult story. Since, how will deputization take place? Who will do it? Nazi Germany, Japan - there was occupation there. And in the case of Russia, who will do it? Today's liberal opposition? Well, it looks bad, to say the least.

+ 7% alcoholism, likewise + 7-8% female alcoholism. The number of crimes is increasing. The number of armed crimes is many times greater. Up to a million people left Russia. Western companies are leaving Russia. But do not underestimate Russia. Putin still has the money. And the army and the Russian security sector cannot be underestimated.

“Therefore, we must have a strategic task: not only to liberate Ukraine, but also to make sure that we and the whole world are no longer threatened by the revanchist regime.”

Ukraine is above all and it is only for us. And everyone else has their own interests. Therefore, we should build our policy so that their interests are contiguous with ours. And for them to understand that with our victory they will receive great benefits.

As of February 24, 2022, no agreements between Ukraine and Russia are in effect.  Putin emphasizes that he is not against sitting down at the negotiating table with Ukraine, as all wars end with agreements.  A purely theoretical question: what can be negotiated with the Russian Federation, if they don't want to and don't abide by any agreements?

If we talk about the exchange of prisoners, the story with the grain, then the talks about it continue now. If we talk about a peace agreement with this regime, I do not believe in it. Because Putin constantly tells Russian journalists that it is necessary to unite the Russian peoples. He considers it his mission and we will never convince him. We can only defeat him. And by the way of our victory to explain him that we are not part of his people. If you compare the history of Russia and Ukraine, the history of Ukraine was completely different. It was about Cossack Sich, Magdeburg law, Lithuanian statutes - it was completely different, with different values and respect for people.  And in Russia - Ivan the Terrible, Stalin, and Peter I. Their entire ideology is built on being proud of the past. And our mentality is built so that we always look to the future. And this has always been a difficult task and this is precisely what makes us fundamentally different. But Putin will never understand this and we need to understand his argumentation as an enemy.  The enemy must always be understood. He did not change his goals regarding Ukraine. He will continue to torment us now, he will torment us tomorrow and the day after tomorrow until we defeat this regime. This is an integral part of our victory — to make the threat from this regime cease to exist. And for this, Russia can no longer be a geopolitical player. You and I talked about a multipolar world. We Ukrainians have always been tolerant, we have always understood others, but criminals should not be part of a multipolar world, because they can only destroy and kill. And it is the business of the whole other world to tame those who are criminals. This process can take a long time, or it can take more time. But the main thing is that we reboot Russia, because without this, the danger for Ukraine will not disappear.

I can't help but ask you about Angela Merkel's statement in an interview with the German newspaper Die Zeit, when the former chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany said that the return of Donbas to the control of Ukraine, but with serious concessions from Russia, was an attempt to win time. In this way, Minsk Agreements I and Minsk Agreements II were a way to give Ukraine the opportunity to build an army and provide it with weapons for the future confrontation with the Russian Federation.  Is this true?

I definitely think so. But Angela is a little tricky.  Because she wanted a settlement. We know very well that the Normandy format arose due to her desire and the Americans really wanted to stay out. But her assessment at the time was that Putin considers the Americans to be the main drivers of the Maidan. And she sought to settle the situation by coordinating with partners. And I think that was a misjudgment at the time. But Angela Merkel did a lot to put pressure on Putin. She is a good tactician and she knows how to turn time around to make it work for us. However, what she did not understand as a strategist, but surely understood as a tactician, is that Putin is capable of anything. Therefore, Angela Merkel should be given credit - of course, she made several political mistakes, but nevertheless, she sincerely tried to help Ukraine. Actually, she is not a politician of the 21st century, I think she is a politician between the 20th and 21st centuries. Therefore, there is something we are very grateful for, and there is something not so good we will always remember her with.

At the end of the year, Zelenskyy visited the USA: a meeting with Biden, a speech before Congress, and the attention of all the world's media. President Joe Biden made it clear to Ukraine that his country will be with us until we defeat Russia. What does this mean for the world and for Russia?

As for the visit, I think it was a good visit not only because of the media coverage, but also because it was an opportunity to feel real emotion for the Americans and show them that they are the leaders of the Western world and their help is crucial. And this visit is a good development, because Biden has shown that he is ready to invest in it. This is his personal history as a politician and as a person. And part of his political legacy should be a joint victory over Russia. With this visit, he showed that we should have a common success story.  And this success story is Ukraine as a democratic state and as an ally of the United States. And after this visit, we will move from partnership visa to alliance and mutual aid elements. Therefore, this visit is worth a lot. And in the end - after all, it is humanly important. These are Christmas days, when people gather as families and see on their screens people who do not have electricity and heat. What I can't help but be happy about is that there is a new aid package. It is basically a defensive weapon. With this weapon, the glass is half full, but so far it's only half full. And it is very important that we have a common strategy that weakens Russia and its regime.
