Maidan brought war to Ukraine, head of Georgia's ruling party says as he compares countries
The head of the ruling Georgian Dream party, Irakli Kobakhidze, said that the war in Ukraine was the result of the Maidan events and compared the countries
This was reported by Echo of the Caucasus media.
"What about the Maidan and what did it bring to Ukraine? They lost Crimea and most of Luhansk and Donetsk, and the continuation of all this is the war that is going on in Ukraine today," Kobakhidze said, adding that this is the result of the processes that radicals want in Georgia.
The chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream party commented on the words of MEP Viola von Cramon about the similarities between the events of the dispersal of the rally in Tbilisi last night and the Maidan in Ukraine in 2013-2014.
"As for the comparison with the Maidan, first of all, I will tell you that there is a Georgian Yanukovych in prison, and his name is Mikheil Saakashvili. We will act not according to the agenda of radicals, the agenda of Viola von Cramon, but in accordance with the interests of Georgian society," Kobakhidze emphasized.
The politician also said that his party acts "in the interests of society" and that the radical opposition misled everyone in connection with the discussion of the draft law on "foreign agents" in parliament. Kobakhidze called such statements speculations, and the adoption of the law will negatively affect Georgia's EU candidate status.
The ruling party, after the adoption of the bills in the first reading, will wait for the opinion of the Venice Commission, which will take less than three months.
Kobakhidze also said that all those who violated the law during the protests should be punished to the fullest extent of the law: "We will go forward with Christianity to Europe! We will move forward with sovereignty towards Europe! We will move forward with dignity towards Europe."
At the same time, he called the 2003 Rose Revolution in Georgia a "revolution of foreign agents" that brought nine anti-European years to the country."
It should be noted that on March 7, the Georgian parliament approved in the first reading the draft law "On Transparency of Foreign Influence," which largely imitates Russian legislation on "foreign agents." Consideration of the draft law on March 7 came as a surprise; it was originally planned to be introduced on March 9. Discussions began in the absence of most opposition MPs.
